On a gentle spring evening in Bucharest, the British Ambassador’s Residence (H.E Giles Portman and Lucie Portman) opened its doors to a gathering defined not only by elegance, but by a shared sense of purpose.

What unfolded was more than a charity gala — it was a heartfelt demonstration of how compassion, diplomacy, and creativity can come together to support Romania’s most vulnerable children. The Life@Teki initiative, championed by Fundația Șeherezada, brought nearly 300 guests into a space where generosity felt as natural as the refined setting that hosted them.

A partnership built on care and commitment

Hosted by H.E. Giles Portman, the British Ambassador to Romania, and his wife, Lucie Portman, the event marked a significant step forward for the modernization of pediatric rehabilitation services at the Techirghiol Balneary and Recovery Sanatorium. Their support — both diplomatic and personal — set the tone for an evening where goodwill and responsibility blended seamlessly:

“The British Embassy is honored to serve as a diplomatic partner in this endeavor, and we warmly invite all people of goodwill to join us in supporting the children of Romania.” H.E. Giles Portman, the British Ambassador to Romania

Ambassador Portman highlighted the unique potential of Techirghiol’s therapeutic heritage, noting that Romania’s natural resources, paired with modern medical technology, can dramatically improve the lives of children in need. His message was echoed by the warm presence of Lucie Portman, a dedicated advocate for Romanian designers and social causes.

Fundația Șeherezada: two decades of impact

The gala was organized by Fundația Șeherezada, an organization with more than twenty years of experience in supporting pediatric institutions across the country. Its founder, Wajiha Haris, spoke passionately about the mission behind Life@Teki: creating a space where natural healing resources meet cutting‑edge medical equipment — all for the benefit of children with complex medical needs. “We have found two remarkable partners in the British Embassy and the Ministry of Health, and among tonight’s guests, a generosity of spirit that is both deeply moving and profoundly encouraging.” Wajiha Haris.

Her vision resonated deeply with the audience, especially as she emphasized the importance of partnerships between government, civil society, and responsible businesses.

Fashion with purpose

The evening’s artistic highlight was a series of fashion presentations offered by Pinko, Gérard Darel, and the legendary Doina Levintza. Models brought color and movement to the ambassador’s garden, transforming the marquee into a vibrant runway.

The moment that drew the most heartfelt applause was the appearance of Doina Levintza, the 86‑year‑old icon of Romanian fashion, whose presence embodied both mastery and grace. Her participation added a symbolic layer to the event — a reminder that creativity, when placed in service of others, becomes a powerful act of generosity.

A gathering of leaders and changemakers

The guest list reflected the significance of the cause: diplomats, public officials, business leaders, cultural figures, and supporters of children’s health initiatives. Despite the chilly weather, the atmosphere remained warm, lively, and deeply engaged.

A silent auction held throughout the evening helped raise additional funds for the Life@Teki project, reinforcing the collective commitment to improving pediatric recovery services.

For me, as a content creator, the evening felt like a reminder of why storytelling matters. Being surrounded by people who came together for a purpose larger than themselves — diplomats, designers, leaders, and supporters of children’s health — gave me the sense that creativity can be a bridge between worlds. I watched the elegance of the setting blend naturally with the sincerity of the mission, and I felt grateful to witness how generosity can take shape in so many forms: in a gesture, in a conversation, in a shared intention to help. It was one of those rare moments when my work didn’t feel like documenting an event, but like being part of a community that chooses to show up for children who need us most.

Why Life@Teki matters

Life@Teki aims to modernize the Pediatric Neuro‑Psychomotor Recovery Centre in Techirghiol, the only facility of its kind in Romania — and the only center in Europe offering recovery services for children undergoing cancer treatment. The project will equip the unit with advanced medical technology, including an open MRI for children, and will upgrade treatment and rehabilitation spaces to ensure better outcomes.

Techirghiol’s therapeutic mud and mineral-rich waters have been recognized for their healing properties since the late 19th century. Life@Teki seeks to bring this heritage into the 21st century, ensuring that children with severe medical conditions receive the care they deserve.

An invitation to join the mission

Fundația Șeherezada warmly encourages companies, foundations, and individual donors to support the Life@Teki initiative. Contributions — large or small — help build a modern, fully equipped recovery center that will serve thousands of children in the years to come.
